Jessie Traill (1881-1967) was a painter and etcher who liked to paint trees and landscapes as well as more industrial subjects like mines and factories.
She joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment in England during the Great War and nursed in military hospitals in France.
When she returned to Australia after the war, Jessie and her sister built a cottage at Harkaway which they named Harfra. A few years later she built a timber studio on land next door. Jessie was a member of the Berwick Red Cross Branch and was responsible for the World War 1 memorials on Harkaway Road . She sold the Harkaway cottage in 1948 and lived in the studio.
