In the 1920s Matthew Cummins and his wife Victoria (nee Mazzenti) bought the land where this Reserve is situated. The original property was much larger and was bounded by Palmerston and Brisbane Streets. The Cummins family lived here.

Matthew died in 1948, Victoria in 1972, both are buried in the Berwick Cemetery.

In 2003 the City of Casey agreed to a proposal to name the previously un named reserve the Matthew Cummins Reserve.
