William (Bill) Thwaites OBE JP (1918-1991)

Bill Thwaites was a dairy farmer and seemingly tireless community worker.

He was a Cranbourne Shire Councillor for 36 years and shire president 5 times. He was treasurer of the Municipal Association of Victoria for 14 years.

He also served on many local boards and committees, some of them being the Local Authorities Superannuation Board, the Western Port Rivers Management Study Steering Committee and the Rural Water Commission and the Victorian Valuation Fees Committee, the Regional Grants Commission, the Shire of Cranbourne Number One Co-operative Housing Society and the Devon Meadows Community Centre.

He served as a trustee of the Yannathan Union Church and the Lang Lang Cemetery, and was a member of the Koo Wee Rup and Lang Lang Football Clubs as well as the Catani and District Tennis Club and West Gippsland Tennis Association. Bill Thwaites played a major role in raising money for the building of the new pavilion at the Catani Recreation Reserve when the old one was destroyed by fire. He was also a member of the Lang Lang Primary School Committee.

He was a Life Member of the Lang Lang Horticultural and Agricultural Society and Western Port Memorial Hospital.
